“The Legend of Punna Wanua”
Long
time ago, in Gusungnge village (Now Kamp. Balanakang Kel. Jagong Kab. Pangkep) there
is a sacred palm tree. Reputedly, the tree is populated by supernatural beings.
A creature that resembles a human being. He always consider himself the owner
of this area, so the people call him “Punna Wanua.” He always showed his form by
always holding “kalompoang” (inheritance objects), such as a spear, dagger and riding a white horse. He very hate person who does
not glorify him. Therefore, everyone who will cross this area must come down
from their vehicle and boosted their vehicles until quite far from this area of
this tree. If not, Punna Wanua will be anger.
One
day, There came a man who use white’s robed. He transit and observe the palm
tree. Caretaker reprimanded and commemorate him but he did not hear it. The
next day he came back. The next day he came back again for the third time. This
time he brought a wooden sticks. He hitting a palm trunk with a stick that he had brought. Then, wind
was blowing hard and suddenly a white-robed men disappeared. Just a stick of
wood found by society. The society called the stick by “pattekkeng”. There are
other aura of the tree. The towering tree looks wilted. Its leaves were
dropping off.
Nobody
understood about what happens and where that mysterious gone. But society
believed that Punna Wanua still inhabits in the same place because society
often see a people who riding horses heading to the river from the that square
and an apparition strange around the area. They believe that Punna Wanua
appears on a specific date. Therefore, Until now, most people still believe
about the existence of Punna Wanua and often give offerings to a former palm
tree when they do the event of customary such as a wedding. Althought, now no
one know where is the exactly palm three
place is.
